How to choose a monitor: resolution, refresh rate and panel type

This guide explains which resolution suits which screen size, when a higher refresh rate makes sense and how IPS and VA panels differ. Then it compares today's monitors by total price.

What to look at

  • Resolution by size: Full HD is enough on 24″, QHD (2560 × 1440) is a sensible standard on 27″, 4K (3840 × 2160) and 5K give sharp text for photo and document work.
  • Refresh rate: 60 to 100 Hz is enough for office work, gamers appreciate 144 Hz and more. The Dell S2725DS runs at 100 Hz, the Samsung Odyssey G5 G55C at 165 Hz.
  • Panel: IPS has accurate colour and wide viewing angles, VA higher contrast and deeper black. Samsung states 2,500:1 for the G55C (VA), Dell 1,500:1 for the S2725DS (IPS).
  • Format: a 21:9 ultrawide (LG 29U511A-B, 2560 × 1080) replaces two smaller screens for spreadsheets and editing, but not every game supports it.
  • Curve: a curved panel (Samsung G55C, 1000R) wraps around your view; for drawing straight lines a flat one is better.
  • Energy label: monitors fall under the EU electronic displays label; it shows an A to G class for SDR and HDR and consumption in kWh per 1,000 hours.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a 27″ monitor with Full HD; text looks grainy at that size.
  • Paying for 165 Hz when the graphics card or console cannot deliver that many frames.
  • Not checking inputs: a laptop without DisplayPort needs HDMI or USB-C.

Is 27″ QHD enough for work?

For most office work, yes. If you spend the day on text or photos, 4K or 5K is worth it.

IPS or VA?

IPS for accurate colour and side viewing, VA for deeper black in films and games in a dim room.

Do I need 144 Hz or more?

For fast games, yes. For office work and films 60 to 100 Hz is enough.
