How to choose a fridge or freezer: volume, NoFrost and the energy label

A fridge runs non-stop, so years of consumption outweigh a price gap. This guide explains how to pick volume and type, how to read the label and which models cost least in total today.

What to look at

  • Volume: the label gives the fridge and freezer volumes separately. Two people usually manage with about 200 l of fridge, a family needs more; freezer size depends on how much you freeze.
  • Type: a combination (fridge and freezer in one tall unit), an American or cross-door with two doors, and a chest freezer for big stocks.
  • NoFrost: the freezer does not ice up and needs no defrosting. The Gorenje NRK6192AXL4 and NRM8182MX both have NoFrost Plus.
  • Energy label: since 1 March 2021 it uses an A to G scale and shows annual consumption in kWh, volumes and noise in dB(A) with a noise class. Compare the kWh per year; the class alone is not enough.
  • Noise: for an open-plan kitchen look for lower dB(A); the label shows noise in dB(A) and a noise class.
  • Size: measure height, width and the space to open the doors. The Gorenje NRM8182MX cross-door is 79.4 cm wide, a usual combination 60 cm.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing only the class and not the annual kWh.
  • Not measuring room to open the doors, especially in a corner.
  • Buying a big fridge for a small household; empty volume is cooled too.
  • Putting a freezer in an unheated garage without checking the ambient temperature it is made for (the climate class in the manual).

Frequently asked questions

What does class E mean on a fridge?

The A to G scale applies since 1 March 2021 and is stricter than the old one with A+++. The class alone does not tell everything; compare the kWh per year.

Do I need NoFrost?

It saves defrosting the freezer. With a fridge you open often it is more convenient.

Where do I find detailed data on a model?

The QR code on the energy label leads to the EU's EPREL database.
